I've no idea either but it does appear to be some sort of reaction wood. It appears to be multiple small trunks that fused together given the appearance of alternating heartwood and sapwood. In addition, it appears to have a second, common sapwood lighter in tone than the other. The black appears to be some sort of staining. Unfortunately nothing big enough for backs or sides. Thought some of it may make nice headstocks veneers,rosette blanks or even bridge and fingerboards blanks. |

I had bought some wood like that and they called it Pale Moon Ebony.. Gary |
